What to Expect

Considering that Boulder is a city known for its glacial progress with new projects, it’s pretty amazing that 13 years ago, mountain biker Bobby Noyes started a campaign to get the town to sanction a biking park. He knew that riders were dying to have a dedicated place to practice jumps and that the exploding cyclo-cross community would be more than happy to rally behind it.

Valmont is now North America’s most state-of-the-art public bike park with over 40 acres of madness featuring a series of “zones” that include mountain bike trails, a skills area, dirt jumps, and a slopestyle terrain park. Trails are clearly labeled for levels of experience ranging from XS to XL, so anyone can enjoy the fun!

Note: The bike park is closed when the trails are wet as riding on wet dirt can damage the trail surface. Please check the website for current park conditions.

Getting Started

Built in 2011 and regarded as one of North America’s most state-of-the-art public bike parks, Valmont offers something for riders of all styles and skill levels. The 42-acre park features a range of amenities from mellow cross-country trails to flowy rhythmic slopestyle with big features like wall rides and a whale tail, dirt jumps, multiple pump tracks, dual slalom courses, and more.

It also includes the “Tot Track,” an easy spot for kids to pedal around, and a short beginner-friendly loop called Skillz that features logs, rock ledges, wooden bridges, and more. Keegan started here on his Strider bike and loved zipping around the trail! The bike park is open daily from dawn to dusk unless closed due to events, maintenance, or weather/trail conditions. Intermediate Trails

If you’re looking to move beyond green trails and start working on your skills, Valmont has plenty of intermediate trails to offer. From rocky XC singletrack to big tabletops, ramps, and drops there are lines to help you build confidence and get better at your craft.

The Heil Valley Ranch area is a popular mountain biking spot northwest of Boulder. The Picture Rock and Wild Turkey trails feature some of the best flow in town. To ride these trails head north on Highway 36 out of town, then take a left at the T to follow Apple Valley Road until you reach the trailhead.

Betasso is a fun place for beginner to intermediate riders. The Walker Ranch loop has some rocky sections, some hike-a-bike, and solid climbs. It is commonly ridden counterclockwise but can be done either way.

Advanced Trails

The park offers a variety of advanced trails that can challenge even the most experienced riders. These trails are designed to be fun and challenging while offering a safe place to test your limits.

The bike park features a unique all-weather Trick Jump where mountain bikers can practice, train, and improve their skills and techniques safely and progressively, rain or shine. This is one of very few such jumps in the state of Colorado and makes Valmont Bike Park one of a kind in the region.

The park is built on a slope and includes a perimeter recreation path that provides both physical and visual separation between the trail system and Lower Lincoln Hills Drive to the north and houses to the south. The path also provides an ADA-accessible route into and through the park.

Dirt Jumps

Many people refer to bike parks as the future of mountain biking and Valmont is a prime example of why! This 42-acre park is divided into several different zones with something for everyone. It’s a great place for beginners to build confidence and get more comfortable with natural trail features!

There are two different pump tracks, a dirt jump area with 5 different lines (XS, S, M, L, and XL) a flowy rhythmic slopestyle course, and a dual slalom race course. There are even a few kid’s bike play areas for the little ones!

Considered to be one of North America’s most state-of-the-art public bike parks, it is free and open to riders of all levels. There is a natural progression throughout the park from “small” through to “extra-large” trails and features. Continue reading about Lost Gulch Overlook.
